An independent spirit and well loved by everyone that knew her, Florence Umphrey was a dear friend and steadfast supporter of ESS.
Florence sadly passed away in 2017 at the age of 89. ESS recently learned she has left us with a $30,000 gift to continue our work in the community, which she strongly believed in.
Fondly remembered for her compassion, sense of humour and musical talents, Florence was a self-taught pianist. Year-after-year she volunteered to share her musical gifts at our Annual General Meetings and her energy and enthusiasm for music always filled the room. She was also an organist at various churches and frequently worked at many funeral homes for their services.
Her unique and individual personality shone through her choice of fashion and cars. She loved her blue convertible PT Cruiser, musical themed costume jewelry and shoes (the more unique the better!). An interest in the arts, Florence loved Broadway, classic movies, Disney and cartoons.
ESS was like family to Florence, a place she felt comfortable and secure. Her 25 years of friendship is something former ESS Chief Executive Officer, Dolores Ellerker, will always treasure. “She was a wonderful and very special lady. She had an energetic force to her, a great sense of humour and touched people with her friendship and warmth. She gave so much of her kindness, support and love to so many people. Florence was always very supportive of ESS, our staff and was ready to help whenever needed.”
We look forward to honouring her legacy by using her gift to continue helping seniors and caregivers remain well at home and in their community through our basket of essential programs and services.
Thank you to the ESS staff members, Florence’s Executor Dr. Sam Abbruzzino and Dolores Ellerker for sharing your warm-hearted memories.
