On a beautiful day in the park, our members gathered for an energizing and empowering pole-walking workshop. Surrounded by green space and fresh air, participants learned how to stay active, improve mobility, and build confidence—one step at a time.
Led by expert instructor Barb Gormley, a certified personal trainer and registered yoga teacher, the session brought together a group of enthusiastic participants eager to explore the benefits of pole walking. The workshop began with a guided introduction to proper pole use, followed by hands-on instruction in posture, rhythm, and technique. Participants practiced together along the pathways, encouraging one another as they learned new skills.

Throughout the session, the atmosphere was relaxed and supportive. Participants gathered near a park bench as Barb demonstrated movements, and later practiced in a circle, focusing on coordination and balance. The vibrant outdoor setting—with open pathways, mature trees, and nearby green fields—created the perfect environment for movement, learning, and social connection.

By the end of the workshop, participants experienced improvements in balance, posture, strength, and confidence. Beyond the physical benefits, the session helped foster a sense of community—bringing people together to support one another in their health and wellness journeys. The group photo captured at the end of the session reflects a meaningful moment of accomplishment and connection.
This initiative is part of a broader commitment to supporting healthy aging in the community. We offer free virtual, telephone, and in-person exercise and falls prevention classes for older adults and seniors in the Etobicoke community. Classes are available at different levels to suit a range of fitness needs and abilities, and are led by certified senior fitness instructors or Registered Kinesiologists. These programs are designed to help individuals stay active, maintain independence, and reduce the risk of falls.

This workshop would not have been possible without the generous support of the Ontario Trillium Foundation, whose funding continues to make these Health and Wellness programs accessible. Their contribution plays a vital role in promoting active living and enhancing the quality of life across the community.
