October is Community Support Month
This is a time to honor and highlight the essential services community support organizations offer and the dedicated professionals behind them.
These services encompass nursing and personal care, homemaking, Meals on Wheels, Alzheimer’s and Adult Day Programs, transportation to medical appointments, caregiver support, and hospice and palliative care.
They empower clients to live independently in their homes and communities for as long as possible, easing the burden on family caregivers and the broader healthcare system. With Ontario’s population aging, the demand for these crucial services will continue to rise.
Community Support Month 2024 recognizes the 20,000 employees and 100,000 volunteers delivering essential home and community care services across Ontario through charities and not-for-profit agencies (OCSO).
There are many meaningful ways to get involved this Month! Here are some ideas:
- Volunteer Your Time: Offer your skills and time to local community support organizations. This could include helping with Meals on Wheels, assisting at adult day programs, or providing transportation for medical appointments. VOLUNTEER WITH US

- Advocate: Engage with local government officials to advocate for policies and funding that support community services. Writing letters or participating in advocacy groups can amplify your voice.
- Support Caregivers: Offer respite care or support to family caregivers needing a break. This can be as simple as spending time with their loved ones or helping with household tasks.
- Educate Yourself and Others: Learn more about the challenges faced by those who rely on community support services and share this knowledge with your community.
