What Is Family Health & Fitness Day?
Hosted annually by the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA), Family Health & Fitness Day promotes healthy lifestyles through physical activity in local parks and recreation spaces. It takes place on the second Saturday in June and invites families and caregivers to come together for active fun.
Whether it’s a brisk walk in the park, a game of catch, a family yoga session, or participating in a community fitness fair, the goal is simple: move together, laugh together, and build healthy habits that last a lifetime.
Why It Matters
In today’s busy world, finding time for physical activity can be challenging, especially as a family. But staying active doesn’t have to mean hitting the gym or running marathons. Family Health & Fitness Day reminds us that even small, joyful movements can significantly affect our physical and mental well-being.
It’s an excellent opportunity for caregivers to model healthy behavior, strengthen family bonds, and create shared experiences that children (and seniors!) will remember.
How to Participate
There are so many ways to celebrate Family Health & Fitness Day in your community:
- 🏃♀️ Join a local event: Many park districts and recreation centers offer free or low-cost activities such as fun runs, outdoor fitness classes, or health fairs.
We offer free virtual, telephone, and in-person exercise and falls prevention classes for older adults and seniors in the Etobicoke community. Classes are provided at different levels to suit your fitness needs and abilities and are led by certified senior fitness instructors or Registered Kinesiologists. - 🚲 Go outside together: Walk, ride bikes, or play at your local playground.
- 💃 Try something new: Start a family dance party, play a game of soccer, or try a beginner-friendly yoga session.
- 📸 Share your moments: Snap a picture of your family in action and post on social media using the hashtag #NRPAFamilyHealthDay to inspire others.
Tips for a Successful Day
- Pack water and snacks to stay energized.
- Dress for the weather—a hat, sunscreen, and comfy shoes are necessary.
- Make it fun and flexible—the goal is movement, not perfection.
- Invite others—extended family, neighbors, or friends can join the fun!
