World Hand Hygiene Day

May 5th, 2022 is World Hand Hygiene Day – a time to bring people together globally in support of hand hygiene.

Hand hygiene is one of the most effective actions you can perform to reduce the risk of infection or spreading infections to others.

As a reminder, hand hygiene should be performed at the point of care and at some key moments:

  • before contact with the client’s environment;
  • before an aseptic (clean) procedure;
  • after the risk of exposure to bodily fluids; and
  • after contact with the client’s environment.

To support effective hand hygiene action at the point of care, our sites have been outfitted with automatic dispensers and appropriate signage illustrating correct handwashing and hand-rubbing techniques.

Clean your hands by rubbing them with an alcohol-based hand rub as this is faster, more effective, and better tolerated by your hands than washing with soap and water. Soap and water should be used when hands are visibly soiled and whenever ABHR is not available. The act of thorough drying is an important step to help eliminate pathogens from your hands.

Working together we can foster a culture of safety and quality by encouraging everyone to clean our hands at the right time and in the right way.
