People choose to volunteer for different reasons. Some feel a pull to give back to their local community or wish to develop and utilize their skills; while others, like Margo, have a personal connection to a specific cause or organization.

Meet our Featured Volunteer: Margo

National Volunteer Week - Margo

Margo joined ESS as a volunteer in 2005 and has been supporting the staff and clients in our Adult Day Service program.

About Margo

Before settling in Toronto, Margo spent time living in Greece and Montreal. Prior to retirement Margo worked in the field of Career Insurance as an Accounting and Customer Service specialist. Her hobbies include travel, baking, decorating, writing family histories, listening to music, reading, crochet and long walks. Margo has 2 children and 2 grandchildren. She loves writing and social contact with family and friends.

Volunteering with ESS

Margo’s volunteer role with ESS enables her to interact with the clients while performing her duties. She enjoy helping and socializing with the seniors, as well as interacting with the other volunteers and the staff – “Everyone is friendly. I look forward to my time at the day program.”

Margo decided to volunteer with ESS due to her personal connection with the agency and our Adult Day Service program.

“My husband was a happy client at ESS for 25 years, and because of this I could still work, afford trips to take him home to Greece to visit his family, and have many stress free happy hours. Because of ESS my entire family had a very happy fulfilling 25 years.”

Margo would emphasize the following message to prospective volunteers:

“Your small part is enabling ESS to provide care and dignity to those who need it most, through the day programs, home support, and transportation — all this enables them to live at home. We all know there is no place like home.”
