ESS Helps Etobicoke Seniors Get Fit!

Regular physical activity plays a vital part in maintaining the health and well-being of our senior population. With the financial support from various funders, ESS offers several free exercise, literacy and nutrition programs throughout the Etobicoke community.

Led by a certified instructor, our exercise programs (insert hyperlink) are developed to encourage older adults and seniors to become more active, participate in a social network, reduce the risk of injuries and falls as well as enhance self-esteem and independence.

ESS is pleased to have received funding to deliver additional exercise programs, making physical activity even more accessible to older adults in our community. Through funding from the Toronto Central LHIN, ESS is now holding exercise classes at 7 new locations throughout various community housing and retirement residences in Etobicoke. In addition to these classes, Falls Prevention Talks are being offered by way of collaboration with St. Elizabeth Health Care.

ESS is also working in partnership with Cloverdale Mall and St. James Food Basket to deliver physical activity classes (such as the Cloverdale Heartwalkers mall-walking Program) and literacy programs aiming to educate older adults about exercise, its importance and impact to healthy aging in place. This partnership specifically targets neighbourhoods which do not have or have minimal access to such programs within the community.

National Volunteer Week 2014

National Volunteer Week (NVW) is an annual campaign initiated by Volunteer Canada to formally recognize, celebrate and thank volunteers for their work and contributions. This year, NVW will take place from April 6-12, 2014.

Each year Volunteer Canada comes up with a new campaign theme for Volunteer Week. The 2014 campaign is a: “Volunt-Hear Hotline”. The hotline is meant to encourage a national conversation about volunteer recognition. It is a toll-free number where people can call to leave a brief impact statement and say thank you to a volunteer for their efforts. The messages will be organized into playlists by Volunteer Canada and will be available for download for everyone to hear first-hand how volunteer work changes lives and shapes communities.

Last year nearly 300 dedicated volunteers support ESS, our programs, services and fundraising initiatives.

Do you wish to recognize a fellow ESS volunteer?

Has an ESS volunteer made an impact in your life?

Would you like to say thank you?

Call Volunteer Canada’s “Volunt-Hear Hotline” at 1-855-372-5077 and leave them a thank you message!
